Feverfew

Feverfew (Tanacetum parthenium) is a medicinal herb traditionally used for its powerful anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties, most notably in the prevention and management of migraines. The active compound parthenolide is believed to inhibit the release of inflammatory substances in the body, helping to reduce the frequency and intensity of migraine attacks. Feverfew has also been used to relieve general headaches, arthritis, and menstrual cramps by reducing inflammation and relaxing smooth muscle tissue. When taken regularly in supplement or tea form, it may help regulate the body’s inflammatory response over time.

In addition to its migraine-relieving effects, feverfew has mild antipyretic (fever-reducing) and sedative qualities, making it useful for alleviating symptoms of colds, flu, and general tension. Some traditional uses also include treating digestive issues and skin conditions, though these applications are less commonly studied. Topically, crushed feverfew leaves have been applied to soothe insect bites and skin irritations. While generally safe for short-term use, feverfew may cause mouth irritation or digestive upset in some individuals, and it should be avoided during pregnancy or combined cautiously with blood-thinning medications.
